Reading opportunities are woven throughout our curriculum, whether children are reading a letter from the trenches in history or a recipe to make chilli in design and technology. Children often need to be able to read well so that they can reason out a maths problem or simply join in with a song.

Children in EYFS and Key Stage One learn to read through our reading programme - Monster Phonics. There is a specific section about the scheme which will explain available resources for both children and parents, should they wish to support their child at home.

In Key Stage 2, Children will become familiar with Reading VIPERS.

VIPERS is an acronym for different skills that children need to demonstrate to be a confident and competent reader. The document below explains how the skills can be developed through questioning.

Learning to read the words in print is only the beginning of the reading journey. From there, children progress to making their own reading choices and expressing preferences by selecting books from the school library.
